Echotype works on your Mac by default. Your audio and text go to the cloud only when you use Echotype Cloud, which is part of Pro, or when you pick a cloud provider yourself. This policy explains what stays on your Mac, what goes online and who handles it.

What stays on your Mac

On Free, speech recognition and cleanup run on your Mac. Your recordings, the text you dictate, your History, Dictionary, Stats, settings, voice notes and meeting transcripts are stored on your Mac. We can't see them. You can delete them in the app or by removing the app.

When the app goes online

Even on Free, the app connects to the internet to download its models, to check for updates and to show notices from us. These requests go to our servers and to the services that host our files, such as Hugging Face and Cloudflare. They carry no audio and no dictated text, but like any web request they include your IP address and the app version.

Echotype Cloud

Echotype Cloud is used when you have Pro (including the trial) or when you choose it as a provider in Settings. When you use it, the app sends your audio or text to our server, which passes it to our model provider, Groq, and returns the result. Meeting summaries and Ask send the meeting transcript the same way. Context-aware cleanup sends the words on screen near your cursor only if you turn on sending text on screen to the cloud.

Our server does not store your audio or text, and our logs never contain them. For each request we keep the time, the number of words, the seconds of audio and the model tokens used, which is what plans and fair use are measured in. Server logs record the time, path and status of each request, without bodies or keys.

Other cloud providers you choose

If you set up another provider in Settings, such as OpenAI, Groq or OpenRouter with your own key, the app sends your audio or text straight to that provider under its own terms. We are not part of that exchange. Local providers such as Ollama and LM Studio stay on your Mac.

Your account

Everyone signs in, on Free too, with Apple, Google or a code sent to your email. For your account we keep your email address, how you sign in, your plan, the end date of a trial, hashes of your sign-in keys (never the keys themselves), the usage counts above and, if you subscribe, the customer and subscription IDs from our payment provider.

Anonymous usage stats and crash reports

These are off unless you turn on "Share anonymous usage stats and crash reports" in Settings. While the setting is off, nothing is sent.

When it is on, about once a day the app sends our server a random install ID that is not linked to you or your account, the app version, the system and chip type, and that day's counts: dictations, words, failures by kind, median speech and cleanup times, which speech and cleanup models are in use, and meetings started and finished. A crash report adds the fixed wording of the error and where in Echotype's code it happened. Usage stats never include audio, text, your dictionary, app names, file paths, names or email addresses.

Services we use

Supabase signs you in, with Apple, Google or an emailed code, and keeps your email and sign-in records. Resend sends our emails, such as sign-in codes and account notices. Groq runs the speech and language models behind Echotype Cloud. Dodo Payments takes payments as our merchant of record and keeps your billing details; card details go to Dodo and never reach us. Railway hosts our server, and Cloudflare hosts this website and our model files. Each handles data only to provide its service to us, and some of them process it outside your country.

This website

The website has no ads, no third-party trackers and sets no cookies. It remembers in your browser, for the current tab only, that you have seen the opening animation. Cloudflare processes standard request data such as IP addresses to deliver and protect the site.

If you join the Windows waitlist, we store your email address and the time you signed up, and use it only to send you one email when Echotype for Windows is ready.

Email

Account emails, such as sign-in codes, receipts and notice of important changes to prices or these policies, are sent to everyone with an account. Product news and offers are sent only if you tick the box for them, which is unticked by default. Every such email has an unsubscribe link, and you can also turn them off in Account in the app. Resend sends our emails.

Your choices

You can turn usage stats off at any time, use only the models on your Mac, or delete your local data in the app. To get a copy of your account data or have your account or waitlist entry deleted, email support@tryechotype.tech. We keep account data while your account exists. Payment records are kept by Dodo Payments as the law requires.

Changes

If we change this policy, we update the date at the top of this page. If a change affects how we use data we already hold, we tell you before it applies.
