Privacy

Does Echotype send my voice to the cloud?

Not by default. On Free, speech recognition and cleanup run on your Mac. Your audio and text go to the cloud only when you use Echotype Cloud, which is part of Pro, or when you pick a cloud provider yourself. Echotype goes online to download its models, check for updates and show notices. Anonymous usage stats are off unless you turn them on, and never include what you say.

Dictation keeps working without internet once you've signed in and the models are downloaded. Echotype Cloud and Pro features need a connection.

What permissions does Echotype need?

Using Echotype

Hold Option and Space, talk, and let go. Echotype writes what you said, cleans it up and pastes it where your cursor is, then puts your clipboard back the way it was.

Can I dictate with a single key, like fn?

Yes. In Settings, pick fn or the left or right Control, Option, Command or Shift as a talk key. Hold it to talk, or tap it twice to keep talking hands-free.

Can I dictate hands-free without holding a key?

Yes. Tap the dictation key twice and Echotype keeps listening until you press it again. Press Esc to cancel.

Which apps does Echotype work in?

Any app with a text field: Mail, Slack, Notes, Messages, Notion, Google Docs in your browser, ChatGPT, code editors and terminals. The text goes wherever your cursor is.

Does Echotype remove filler words like um and uh?

Yes. Fillers go, and when you correct yourself, for example "four, no wait, five", the correction replaces the mistake.

Can Echotype make lists from what I say?

Yes. When you dictate a list ("packing list: charger, passport, headphones" or "2 chargers, 3 adapters and a passport"), Echotype writes it as a list. You can also say "new line" to start a new line.

Can I edit text by voice? Pro

Can I speak Hindi or Hinglish?

Speak Hindi, English or both. Echotype types Hindi in Devanagari, or Hinglish in English letters if you prefer.

Can I teach Echotype names and words it gets wrong?

Yes. Add them to your dictionary and Echotype spells them the way you want.

Can I hide Echotype from the screen completely?

Yes. Choose the menu bar instead of the pill in Settings, and the menu bar icon shows when Echotype is listening.

How fast is Echotype?

Cleanup takes about a tenth of a second on a recent Mac with Apple silicon, so the text lands moments after you let go of the key.

Meetings and files

Can Echotype transcribe meetings?

Yes. It writes down Meet, Teams, Zoom, Slack huddle and FaceTime calls as people talk, with who said what, all on your Mac. It hears your microphone and, with Screen Recording permission, the computer's audio. Pro adds meeting summaries and lets you ask questions about a meeting.

Does Echotype listen to my calls without asking?

No. When a call app starts using the microphone, Echotype offers to take notes. It only checks which app has the microphone, and never listens until notes start.

Can Echotype transcribe a voice note or recording?
